Indd 26 4/30/2012 5:32:35 PM NIETZSCHE’S EARLY WRITINGS 27 Nietzsche continued to write autobiographical notes, texts, and diaries (and his correspondence also had strong autobiographical elements), and although there is no document of a similar length or with such a broad scope until Ecce Homo in 1888, one can find over ten further autobiographies or partial autobiographies among his early writings, many of them written for specific purposes (such as school assignments, university graduation, a presentation of himself for Basel, a self-presentation for a philosophical journal), as well as others that were written more for his own sake.
Instead, Nietzsche used Plato and his writings at this time to discuss other topics (especially Theognis and Democritus). It is only after he became a professor at Basel in 1869 that we find evidence of a more serious consideration of Plato, Platonic philosophy, and Platonic questions in their own right and for their own sake — or, perhaps more accurately, for the sake of teaching them. He began to teach Plato at the Pädagogium during his first term in Basel, in the summer of 1869, and at the university during the winter term of 1871/1872.
